Amid the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has developed its own AI tool in the same vein as ChatGPT, in an effort to combat the Chinese military’s AI advances.
As Just The News reports, the CIA plans to launch its own artificial intelligence platform in order to provide its employees with easier methods of accessing intelligence and information. Specifically, the new technology hopes to allow users to acquire the original source more quickly than before for faster analysis.
“We’ve gone from newspapers and radio, to newspapers and television, to newspapers and cable television, to basic internet, to big data, and it just keeps going,” said Randy Nixon, director of the CIA’s Open-Source Enterprise division. “We have to find the needles in the needle field.”
“Then you can take it to the next level and start chatting and asking questions of the machines to give you answers, also sourced,” Nixon continued. “Our collection can just continue to grow and grow with no limitations other than how much things cost.”
The new tool will be available to all 18 branches of the American intelligence community, from the CIA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to the National Security Agency (NSA), but will not be publicly accessible and will also be forbidden for use by members of Congress.
The escalation comes as China has increasingly turned its focus towards AI, with the country’s technology sector partnering with their military for a faster collaborative process. The Communist nation hopes to be the world’s leader in the AI field by the year 2030.
